Developing Your Social Strategy

When we were asked to present at the 2018 Indiana Chamber Executives Association Conference, we were thrilled! As a small business ourselves, we want to share our expertise and see our neighbors succeed. Here are the top ten takeaways from our session:

1. Social media is relevant now more than ever.

People rely on social media to make to connect with one another, express themselves and make purchase decisions. Luckily, you can use social media to achieve many of your marketing goals.

2. Work towards actionable goals

Actionable goals you can work towards are engagement, recruitment, being a resource and partnering. You can measure your goals through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as clicks to website, event attendance, engagement rates and reach.

3. Social media is NOT free.

It’s an investment of time and effort, but it’s well worth it.

4. You must be social.

Make valuable interactions, not one-way communication. Listen and respond to your audience.

5. You don’t need to invest in ALL channels.

Start with one and get really good at it. We recommend that first one be Facebook, but the next ones are up to you. Choose that new media based on your audience and the type of content you have to share.

6. Make sure you are searchable and discoverable.

This means that your handle, page name, hashtag and images are clear and concise. Social media users can easily identify you.

7. Promote sharable, likable content.

Every time you post, think to your self, is this something I’d like if I saw it on my own newsfeed? Is it interesting or valuable enough that I’d share it to my own wall? If you answered yes to both, then you probably have good content.

8. Don’t be afraid of negative comments or reviews.

It’s an opportunity for growth and your positive response to a negative comment says a lot more than the negative comment.

9. Be creative with your images.

They should be arresting and interesting. Don’t be afraid to play with different angles and close-ups.

10. Keep the momentum rolling.

Consistently publishing content, respond to comments and be social. The more you interact with your audience, the more likely you are to stay on newsfeeds and top of mind.
